I was surprised to find the English for Effective Business Writing course from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on Coursera. So, when it happened, I decided that it could be an excellent opportunity to improve my English. My idea was getting theoretical knowledge and found something new which I can use immediately at my work.
The purpose of the course is to teach of business mail writing in general and Business Email, Persuasive Email, Memo, Executive Summary in particular. Two further aims of the course are facilitating understanding of business language and exploring of frequent grammatical errors.
The course is very well structured; you may feel how many hours of work and brainpower are behind the course. That is why my expectations of the lessons were wholly justified. The studying program provides proper theoretical training, which significantly facilitates learning and successful completion of tests.
The important thing is that you probably should have enough time to take this course and finish it at an appropriate level. It happens due to the fact that the business language requires time. Also, I should recommend you to pass all tests, including optional, and not be limited to mandatory ones as well as spend more time with additional/facultative materials. For example, It was interesting to read about the concept of kairos and got historical information about this. I just want to say, that it’s useful having the ability to write or speak appropriately for a given situation. This important is not only for business letters.
Unfortunately, I tracked studying time just from week four. But, by my feelings, It took me around 25-30 hours to finish the course.
So, it’s the same result as it should by Coursera (6 weeks, 3-5 hours per week,18-30 hours in total)
I recommend it and wish you all the best.
